UMSERGE SPECIAL SESSION AT APA CONFERENCE 2015

OBJECTIVE:

The main objective of the panel session is to discuss findings from research undertaken on various aspects related to the social and environmental well-being of the island population of Pangkor. Rapid development of tourism is expected to stimulate business opportunities for the local communities, and indirectly increase socio-economic development. However, such development is likely to have a profound impact on society and the environment. Several important issues will be highlighted and measures to improve social and environmental well-being will be proposed.

SIGNIFICANCE:
Pangkor Island lies off the coast of Manjung District in the State of Perak. The Lumut-Pangkor-Pangkor Laut corridor is one of the major international tourism destinations in Peninsular Malaysia. The Perak Government is encouraging increased development on the island. However, the authorities would like to achieve a sensible and sustainable development for the island.

RELEVANCE TO POPULATION STUDIES:
Pangkor Island has about 20000 population, consisting of mainly fishermen and those who make a living out of tourism-related activities.
