Research Activities By Dr. Goh Hong Ching And UMSERGE (2015-2016) JANUARY - DECEMBER 2015

JANUARY - DECEMBER 2015
20th Jan 2015- Dr. Goh presented her initial research findings on ‘Mangrove Governance in Iskandar Malaysia’ during the MIT-UTM field-based Practicum 2015 in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Jalan Semarak, Kuala Lumpur. In her presentation, she assessed the present governance structure in urban planning observed in Iskandar Malaysia which has great influence on the natural resource conservation in the region.  
 


1st Feb 2015- Dr. Goh became a member of the Global Young Academy (GYA), of which her membership serves a 5-year term. The GYA aims to become voice of the young scientists around the world with empowerment of young researchers to lead international, interdisciplinary and intergenerational dialogue to make global decision making evidence-based and inclusive. The GYA provides a rallying point for outstanding young scientists from around the world to come together to address topics of global importance. As of 2014, the GYA has reached its full capacity with 200 members, leading young scientists (defined as an average age of 35 years and at the beginning of their independent academic career) from 58 countries and all continents, and 63 alumni.   
               

 


23rd April 2015- Dr. Goh presented her research findings on ‘Mangrove Governance in Iskandar Malaysia’ to the MIT SPURS (Special Program for Urban and Regional Studies). During the presentation, Dr Goh highlighted the issues and problems related to urban governance in medium-income countries (e.g. Malaysia) and its inherited top-down administrative structure due to the colonization.   
                                             

 


4th May 2015- Visit to Fields Museum, Chicago- one of the world largest natural history museums with more than 20 millions specimens and objects. Dr. Goh met with curators and person in charge on nature conservation and education in the Field Museum to gain the knowledge about the issues and problems of nature conservation in the city and its metropolitan, which actually shares certain degree of similarity with the ones of developing countries.   
                                             

   

30th April 2015- Dr. Goh attended the opening ceremony of the exhibition and talks on Female faces in sustainable places: Malaysian Women Promoting Sustainable Development, taken place in Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge MA. 
                                           


11th April 2015- Dr. GOh participated in the 1st Annual Conference organized by MIT, DUSTMIT and SPURS which is sponsored by MIT Metro Lab with focus on ‘Understanding Metro Gap’. Among the topics presented were Governing the Metropolis, Matrix Metropolitan Planning: Madrid and other Metropolitan Areas, Rethinking Housing in Mexico at a Large Scale, Building Metropolitan Governance in Argentina, the IDB’s experience and the Metropolitan Imperative and the World Bank Metro Lab.
                                              


23 June 2015: Dr. Goh was among the six Malaysian alumni to share the research experiences in Europe, during the European mobility programmes organized by the Euraxess LINK ASEAN, at Hilton Hotel KL Sentral. She shared her PhD research experience in Germany, which were fully funded by the DAAD (scholarship) and GTZ (research grant for her field work in Sabah, Malaysia) from Oct 2004 to Dec 2007. 
                                            


11th Sept 2015- Together with the director of the DAAD Kuala Lumpur, Dr. Goh conducted a webinar speaking on ‘How to write a research proposal to Germany’. This webinar aimed to provide a set of hand-on tips to the potential applicants who are interested to pursue their post graduate study in Germany with the possible financial aid by the DAAD.   
                                            



27 July- Dr. Goh presented the initial finding of Pangkor Island project in the 3rd Asian Population Association Conference 2015, Kuala Lumpur. During the presentation, she highlighted the importance of each stakeholder, especially the grass root level- both the communities and the local authority in moving towards sustainable development.   
                                           


August 2015- Dr. Goh’s educational video which is published by Massachusetts Institute of Technology has come online which can be viewed at https://malaysiacities.mit.edu/mangrove-forests. This educational video is one of the outcomes of her participation as visiting scholar in the MIT-UTM Malaysian Sustainable Cities Program academic year 2014/2015.   
                                            



7th- 21st Aug 2015- Dr. Goh received the visit of Prof. Dr. Norman Backhaus, Department of Geography, University of Zurich to UMSERGE, Universiti Malaya. In conjunction with Prof. Backhaus’s visit, a stakeholder roundtable discussion on protected area project and a joint fieldwork to Kinabalu Park with courtesy call to Sabah Parks were conducted. The outcome of the meeting is joint paper writing and co-authorship of book, which due Dec 2016.  
                                           

     


24th Aug 2015- Dr. Goh attended the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Universiti Malaya and Malaysian Institute of Planners (MIP) at Mercu Alam Bina, Universiti Malaya. The MoU symbolized a remarkable milestone for both Universiti Malaya and the professional body to strengthen the cooperation and knowledge exchange between academia and the industry in urban planning and development. Dr. Goh is currently the corporate member of the Institute.   
                                            


20th -23rd September 2015- Dr. Goh, as the studio master for Planning Studio V (Local Plan) led a group of 3rd year students from the Urban and Regional Planning Department to conduct field work in Sepang District. During the fieldwork, they attended a briefing given by the Sepang Municipal Council and conducted empirical survey including observation, interviews and land use survey in the entire district of Sepang based on sectoral study. The group also had an interaction session with the children at Baitul Barokah Wal Mahabbah.
                                            

    


18th -21st November 2015- Dr. Goh presented a poster titled ‘Save Sungai Selangor and Indigenous people. Looking back, moving forward’ in the JSPS Asia Core Program Comprehensive Symposium 5 at Kyoto University, Japan. 

8th-9th December 2015- Dr. Goh was invited as the speaker by the Volkswagen Foundation to give a statement on natural resource governance in coastal region in a Herrenhausen Symposium on ‘Sustainable Development Goals and the role of research. A focus on coastal region’. During the symposium in Hanover, Germany, she presented the case of mangrove governance in the Iskandar Malaysia. 

18th December 2015- Dr. Goh was invited to give a talk on ‘How to write a research proposal to Germany’ during the Research and Postgraduate Study Opportunities in Germany – Information Seminar organized by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in close cooperation with the Graduate Centre and the Centre for Research & Instrumentation Management (CRIM) of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and support by the Federal German Ministry of Education and Research.


JANUARY - SEPTEMBER 2016
31st January- 6th February 2016- Dr Goh was selected to participate in the DAAD Science Tour 2016 which themed ‘City of the Future- Research for Sustainable Urban Development’. The participants come from both developed and developing countries which include Canada and the U.S., United Kingdom, Italy, Turkey, Belgium, Australia, Thailand, India, China, Mexico, Spain, Italy and Malaysia. The participants visited several renowned research institutes and universities including RWTH Aachen University, the Wuppertal Institute, the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering and Organization (IAO) in Stuttgart and the Institute for Mobility Research (IFMO) of the BMW Group in Munich.

16th Feb 2016- Dr Goh presented a paper titled ‘Tinjauan polisi perancangan dan halatuju pembangunan gunatanah di Pulau Pangkor’ during the UMSERGE Seminar focusing on research project on Pangkor in Pullman Hotel, Bangsar.

 

9th -10th May 2016- Dr Goh was invited to present a paper during the International Conference on Ethnic Minorities’ Cultural Heritage and Teaching Innovation organized by Tze-Chi Science and Technology University, Taiwan. Her presentation titled ‘Sea Gypsies on southern Johor, Malaysia- impacts of urbanization on the indigenous people in Iskandar Malaysia’.

 

 

11th- 12th May 2016- Dr Goh was invited to attend the inception workshop on ‘SEAMEO-DAAD Lecture Series” and the “2nd High Officials Meeting on SEA-TVET’ in Bali, Indonesia. The workshop was attended by DAAD alumni from Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, the Philippines and Malaysia, as well as director of DAAD Jakarta and director of SEAMEO and staff of SEAMES.

 

 

9th-12th June 2016- Dr Goh was selected as the fellow of the ASEAN Science Leadership Program co-organized by Global Young Academy and the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) of Thailand. The program was held in Bang Saen, Thailand.

 

 

23rd June 2016- Dr Goh was invited as a speaker in the Urban Nature Seminar organized by Future Cities Lab of the ETH-Singapore where she presented a concept paper on ‘natural resource conservation in a fast urbanized region of Iskandar Malaysia’. The one-day seminar was held in Hort Park, Singapore.

18th August 2016- Dr Goh gave an online lecture on ‘Introduction to urbanization’ organized by DAAD Jakarta and SEAMES. The targeted participants were the teachers in vocational schools across the ASEAN countries.

 

21th-25th August 2016- Dr Goh attended and made an oral presentation at the SCAR Open Science Conference took place in Kuala Lumpur Convention Center. Her presentation titled ‘Perceptions of Antarctic values in Malaysia’, a flagship project fully funded by MOSTi.

 

19th-30th September 2016- Dr Goh was selected to participate in the summer school organized by TU Dortmund and supported by DAAD titled ‘Reconciling livelihoods and biodiversity conservation in protected area management’ in Nepal, Kathmandu and Chitwan National Park Nepal.
