MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF CENTRE SPATIAL-ENVIRONMENTAL GOVERNANCE

Welcome to the website of the Spatial-Environmental Governance for Sustainability Research (UMSERGE). Nowadays, education reform has become one of the important demands in the national level especially in the fields of research and innovation. UMSERGE was registered under the Sustainability Science Cluster in 2009. The multi-disciplinary approach is an important part of this form of governance since we are dealing with complex systems such as environmental systems, ecosystems, urban systems, etc. This approach will focus on three concepts (a) Governance is consistently viewed as the process involved in decision-making, (b) The process of decision-making take place through institutions (including mechanisms, systems, and traditions), and lastly (c) The processes and institutions of decision-making involve multiple actors.
The goal of becoming a leading research centre in sustainability governance by year 2020 provides a platform for UMSERGE to enhance its research activity. Research work will revolve around four main trusts (a) Philosophy which sets the parameters of governance and conceptual framework, (b) Levels of governance (existing state of the art at the global level & field study at local level), (c) Areas of governance (urban governance & protected area governance), (d) Mechanisms of governance-new modes of governance emerging from case-studies.
