Workshop On "Governance Of Land-Use Conflicts In Selangor River Watershed"
Title of Event : Workshop On "Governance Of Land-Use Conflicts In Selangor River Watershed"
Date & Day : 26/10/2013 – 27/10/2013 (Saturday & Sunday)
Venue : Pebble Beach 1, Holiday Inn, Kuala Lumpur Glenmarie
Introduction
The issues of watershed governance are becoming more important in our country (Malaysia) and also at the international level. University Of Malaya’s UMSERGE through its Governance of Land-Use Conflicts in The Sungai Selangor Watershed project had organized “Bengkel Hala Tuju Projek Penyelidikan Tadbir Urus dan Konflik Guna Tanah Kawasan Tadahan Sungai Selangor” on the 26th October 2013 to 27th October 2013. Sungai Selangor is the most important river in the state of Selangor, Malaysia. Sungai Selangor is the second largest river in Selangor state with the length of 134-kilometres in length. The total watershed area of Sungai Selangor is about 2.200-kilometres square. The rapid growth increase in industrial and residential development in Selangor and the Federal Territory gave reasons for Jabatan Bekalan Air Selangor (currently known as Perbadanan Urus Air Selangor Berhad) to undertake a study on water and supply. In the 1960’s a study had already identified Sungai Selangor as a potential source for water supply and also was regarded the ultimate and largest undeveloped source of water supply available in Selangor.
On October 26th, 2013, a workshop was convened to discuss the issues, challenges, method and strategies on how to enhance good watershed governance and also put the Selangor watershed at best condition. From the discussion, nine articles will be draft as a result of the research. The nine instead of ten participants was included six researchers and three secretariats from this flagship project as shown below :
Discussion
Before the workshop is running, the project leader head had proposed about writing an article. Each researcher must be come out with one article per person. The articles are based on the output from project research done, fieldwork, and from the meeting and discussion with the stakeholder. The discussion from the workshop done had successfully identified the following title for the article and as a result nine articles will be written as shown below. Therefore, all of the article will be publish and also might be compile as a book.

Conclusion
Watershed issue and conflicts be denser now days. Hopefully by this research done, we will be able to contribute an effort to handle the issue and problems especially happen at Sungai Selangor watershed. Grey to Green Initiative also thought that : we have an opportunity to try more, do more, and learn more than we ever have in the past. This result can be a big chance or step forward towards more healthy urban watersheds (Portland Watershed Management Plan, 2007-08).
